Sometimes a CV will not guarantee you a job. Interviews can spoil your very attractive resume. How you behave, act, talk plays a major role in becoming successful in an interview. Here are 10 things you should avoid. It is not all, they are just 10 most things to be avoided. So please read till end of the article.
1. Turning up late
Turning up late for an interview will not endear you to any employer. Lateness implies that you don’t care. It also shows that you do not respect the interviewer (probably your next boss).
2. Coming too early
Showing up too early is also not conducive. It can be inconvenient for the interviewer. This can actually hurt your chances at landing the job. It is good to come at least 15-20 minutes before. Anything more than that can be dangerous.
3. Dressing inappropriately
It is all about first impressions! This means you should wear professional, or business, attire. Generally men should wear suit jacket and slacks with a shirt and tie or a sweater and button-down etc. Ladies should be in blouse and dress pants or a statement dress is appropriate etc.
4. Speaking badly about your previous or current employer
No matter how despotic or bad or ineffectual your previous or current employer are, talking bad about them won’t reflect well on you, it does more harm than good. By the same token the interviewer will assume that you would similarly trash him or her in future
5. Being defensive
Avoid aggressive and defensive language or actions. Do not argue with the interviewer but rather if he/she asks you a hard question, take your time to answer, do not rash but also do not take too long.
6. Crossing or hiding your arms
If you do so it shows that you are defensive or wary of the situation. It may also mean you are not honest enough. So rather keep your arms visible and open your chest.
7. Talking too much.
Be concise. If you talk too much you can turn your interviewer off. Once it is like that, the game may be over for you. So you need to pay attention to social cues. If you are frequently being cut off in order to move on it may mean that you are talking too much. So PAY ATTENTION to that.
8. Act desperate
Most people try to show how much they need the job and end up showing desperation. Keep your emotions in check and express your interest in the position appropriately. Don’t over express yourself.
9. Not Doing Your Research
In as much as you know your job, you also need to do a research about the company. That is, how it works/operates. Get to know their vision, mission and values. Browse something about the organisation.
10. Talk Too Soon About Money
Asking too much about money shows that all you need is money. You are not interested about anything else except money. It can also mean you are desperate about the money. Therefore you can be a very good candidate of strikes, stubborn etc.
