The Incumbent will be reporting to the Database Systems Administrator and will be responsible for the following, among other duties:

DUTIES
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
Perform regular security monitoring, applies operating system patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities, configure / add new services as necessary.
Perform periodic (daily, weekly or monthly) performance reporting to support capacity planning.
Partake in the enforcement of disaster recovery plans, reports, documentation and operational manuals
Ensuring all software is properly licensed and up to date
Perform regular file archival and purge (subject to approval) as necessary for all Zimpost applications with great emphasis on mission-critical systems and infrastructure.
Repair and recover from hardware or software failures maintaining minimum downtime as outlined in the IT policy document.

Coordinate and communicate with impacted SBUs advising them on nature and extend of failures and expected time for system to be back online.
Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
Read technical journals and/or manuals, attend vendor seminars and appropriate professional development workshops to learn about the maintenance and use of emerging technology

REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems or other relevant qualification.
Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in UNIX or Microsoft systems is an added advantage.
Demonstrable passion, interest and possibly experience in systems administration.
Knowledge of database management systems, operating systems, virtual machines, and scripting.
Ability to understand financial and business issues as they relate to organisation
Good problem-solving, analytical, administrative, organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
