Neotree
Worldwide, 2.3 million babies younger than 28 days die every year, with one million dying on
their day of birth. Seventy percent of these deaths are preventable by implementing
low-cost solutions effectively. Digital innovations have the potential to accelerate health
systems strengthening and support the delivery of evidence-based newborn interventions
across the care continuum. Since 2014, we have been co-developing our intervention
(Neotree), with healthcare workers in Bangladesh, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and the UK. To date,
Neotree has been used to improve the care of over 38,000 babies, by more than 1,200
healthcare professionals in five hospitals across Malawi and Zimbabwe. We can save over
half a million babies’ lives, and improve the care of over 27 million babies, every year if the
Neotree is adopted by Ministries of Health across low-income countries
Sepsis is a crucial cause of death and disability in newborns, but tests for the disease are
slow and not widely available. We aim to use Neotree data to develop a machine-learning
enabled risk stratification tool for sepsis to identify which newborns most need antibiotics
and which can safely be discharged.
