Post: Research Coordinator – Spatial Data Scientist
The Research Coordinator – Spatial Data Scientist will play a key role in a multinational and interdisciplinary team, coordinating scientific and analytical activities related to collating and harmonizing large datasets. The primary focus will be on characterizing environmental exposures associated with air pollution and heat using global satellite and climate datasets, geo-statistical techniques, deep learning, and other machine learning methods. The ideal candidate should possess proficiency in spatial data analysis and data management. The Spatial Data Scientist will also contribute to the writing and publication of research results and provide line management to junior researchers and interns. It is expected that the successful candidate will register for a PhD.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A master’s degree in Geospatial Sciences, Spatial Epidemiology, Data Science or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in spatial data analysis, data management, and statistical modeling.
- Proficiency in GIS software, such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Strong programming skills in R and/or Python.
- Experience in handling and analyzing large datasets, preferably in a cloud computing environment like Google Earth Engine or Google Colab.
- Experience using remote sensing and climate datasets for environmental exposure assessment (e.g., MODIS, ERA5).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, stakeholders, and collaborators.
- Demonstrable experience with Python (or R or STATA) data processing and numerical packages, including NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas.
- Demonstrable experience with Python machine learning packages, such as scikit-learn, and at least one deep learning platform such as Keras, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
ADDED ADVANTAGES
- Familiarity with data visualization software, such as Tableau or PowerBI.
- Experience in scientific writing, with evidence of at least one first authored peer reviewed publication
- Previous experience in research on air quality and health
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate scientific and analytical activities related to collating and harmonizing large datasets.
- Characterize environmental exposures related to air pollution and heat using global satellite and climate datasets, geo-statistical techniques, deep learning, and other machine learning methods.
- Conduct spatial data analysis and manage geospatial datasets.
- Participate in the writing and publication of research results.
- Provide line management and supervision to junior researchers and interns.
- Register for a PhD program to further enhance research expertise.
- Implement spatial data infrastructures and set up/manage geoportals and geoweb platforms.
- Utilize remote sensing and climate datasets for environmental exposure assessment.
- Utilize geographic information system (GIS) software, such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Demonstrate strong programming skills in R and/or Python, and numerical packages, including NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas, scikit-learn, and at least one deep learning platform such as Keras, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
- Handle and analyze large datasets, preferably in a cloud computing environment such as Google Earth Engine or Google Colab.
- Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, stakeholders, and collaborators.
- Familiarity with data visualization software, such as Tableau or PowerBI, will be advantageous.
