United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
DUE: 14 MAY 2024
Background
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are core principles at UNDP: we value diversity as an expression of the multiplicity of nations and cultures where we operate, we foster inclusion as a way of ensuring all personnel are empowered to contribute to our mission, and we ensure equity and fairness in all our actions. Taking a ‘leave no one behind’ approach to our diversity efforts means increasing representation of underserved populations. People who identify as belonging to marginalized or excluded populations are strongly encouraged to apply. Learn more about working at UNDP including our values and inspiring stories.
UNDP does not tolerate sexual exploitation and abuse, any kind of harassment, including sexual harassment, and discrimination. All selected candidates will, therefore, undergo rigorous reference and background checks.
Job Purpose and Organizational Context
UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, and institutional capabilities and build resilience to sustain development results. UNDP is working to strengthen new
frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. We support countries’ efforts to achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide
global development priorities through 2030. The key 2030 Agenda principle of leaving no one behind and stamping out inequality is at the core of everything we do.
UNDP focuses on helping countries build and share solutions in three main areas:
• Sustainable development
• Democratic governance and peacebuilding
• Climate and disaster resilience
In all our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, minorities and the poorest and most vulnerable.
The Poverty Reduction Environment and Climate Change Unit is structured to address two key Outcomes in the 2021-2025 Zimbabwe CPD namely Outcome 2: Environmental protection, climate resilience and natural resource management and Outcome 3: Economic transformation, equitable and inclusive growth. Under the Environmental protection, climate resilience and natural resource management pillar, the PRECC Unit supports the Government of Zimbabwe in implementing various international obligations defined under the following: the Paris Agreement (UNFCCC), Sustainable Energy for All initiative (SE4All), Sendai Framework, Biodiversity Convention and other MEAS. The Unit supports the implementation of national policies, strategies and targets set under national development plans focusing on the climate change, energy, agriculture, forestry, environment, waste management, and disaster risk reduction, bringing benefits to rural and urban poor particularly youth and women in most fragile landscapes and vulnerable situations through projects. Building on its whole-of-society and strong partnership approach for climate action, the PRECC Unit will expand partnerships and new forms of collaboration across sectors including building new non-traditional partnerships with private sector for enhanced diversified and clean production. The unit will also support national pro poor energy transition, broader low emissions development across all sectors in the country and develop new financing models that enable the country to pursue enhanced national climate response trajectory.
Economic transformation, equitable and inclusive growth pillar seeks to address the poverty challenge, focusing interventions at both macro and subnational levels. At macrolevel, the key priority for the Unit will be to strengthen institutional capacities to design and implement pro-poor national development strategies and policies in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) working closely with Government and other partners. Similarly, the Unit supports the capacity strengthening of subnational institutions to design and implement livelihood support interventions for increased productivity, income, and rural development as means of sustainably lifting target groups out of poverty.
