Organization overview
APOPO is a Belgium Humanitarian Demining Organization operating in Zimbabwe. Our mandate is clear landmines and explosive remnants of war that threaten lives and livelihoods.
Role overview
The Medic is responsible for the medical welfare of the all personnel at the campsite.
Duties and responsibilities
- He/ she is responsible for individual responsibilities plus organizational responsibilities (i.e., vaccines + insurance):
- Medical welfare of the personnel deployed to the Task Site.
- Having knowledge of and keeping records of how many deminers and visitors have entered the minefield.
- Establishing effective radio communication with the base-camp location on arrival at the task site, and hourly radio checks with the base station. If the communication with base camp is broken, this shall be reported immediately to the clearance Team Leader.
- Arrangement for preventive healthcare for all deminers deployed to a Task Site, including infectious disease prevention (mosquito nets, appropriate hand washing, STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) prevention etc.).
- Maintenance of the deminers‟ health records including absence due to illness.
• Responsibility for the visitors‟ book. The information will include name, organization and blood group. - Maintenance of the ambulance equipment according to the Ambulance Equipment List, on a daily basis and, if necessary, requesting re-supplies from the Medical Coordinator.
- Daily check of all medical equipment. Any missing or destroyed item shall be reported the same day and be replaced as soon as possible, preferably within 3 days.
- The medic is responsible for recording equipment checks and records shall be kept in the medical checklist.
- Know the evacuation route to the nearest medical facility and/ or designated HLS/airstrip.
- Ensuring that the ambulance driver is aware of his duties during Casevac.
- Train the Deminers / Mine Action Staff in BLS.
- Training and assessment of the ambulance driver in Basic Life Support techniques and basic
- The Medic maintains accurate details of the work location and contact details for all relevant local medical facilities.
- Ensures that the assigned medical equipment is complete and serviceable as described in the APOPO Medical SOP and the on -site requirements checklist.
- Remains alert and always available during clearance activities in the field.
- Ensures that the Ambulance/safety vehicle is available and capable of evacuating a casualty.
- Always maintains a high level of collective hygiene at the control point, camp site and in the ambulance.
- Assist the Senior medic and other medics in the preparation of requests for drugs, medical equipment, and any other documentation
- Inspect/ensure the validity of medicine, drugs and equipment daily.
- Report any problems or concerns related to medical coverage, equipment, or medical kits in the operation area to the Senior medic.
- The APOPO Medic is required to use a handheld radio or other communications system (cell phone) to monitor the progress of demining operations and maintain a link with the Radio Operator.

Qualifications and competencies
- Paramedic or Nursing background (Primary Care Nurse, Registered General Nurse (Diploma/Degreed Nurse)
- 3-5 years relevant experience
- Valid Allied Health/Nursing Practicing certificate
- At least 5 O Level’s
- Emergency/Trauma related certificate
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Mine Action experience is desirable
