The University seeks to recruit a focused; results oriented candidate for the post of Executive Dean for
the Faculty of Communication and Information Science which consists of the following Departments:
Journalism and Media Studies, Library and Information Science, Records and Archives Management
and Publishing Studies. The post is a full-time strategic position to be held for a period of four (4) years
in the first instance.

Main Responsibilities
The Dean is the chief academic, administrative and financial officer of the Faculty, and will be
responsible for leadership in the following functions:
 administration and management,
 teaching and learning,
 research and scholarship,
 community outreach,
 innovation and technology development,
 income generation and financial management,
A proven track record of achievement in the above areas is a must.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess a postgraduate qualification or equivalent obtained from an
approved institution, preferably to the level of a Doctorate Degree in any one of the disciplines offered
by the Faculty.

Experience
 Be at least at Senior Lecturer Grade (or have credentials that would qualify the candidate for
appointment at that level);
 At least 3 years’ experience in academic and administrative leadership.
 Evidence of experience or participation in applied research that seeks to solve real-life societal
problems, innovation and technology development.

Skills and Attributes
 Demonstrated administrative ability to lead and work in a team.
 Proven commitment to academic excellence and collaboration across disciplines.
 Interact with Deans of other Faculties in developing, national/regional/international
collaborative research projects
 Engage Deans of other Faculties to develop interdisciplinary degree programmes
 Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with students, academic staff,
administrators and external constituencies.
 Demonstrated ability to forge partnerships and garner support from business and community
constituencies leading to industrial attachment and employment opportunities for students, as
well as business development.

 Ability to source external funds for research and improvement of teaching.
 Introduce new and relevant micro-credentials/short courses as part of ‘continuous education’ for
the community.
 Demonstrate a commitment to introduce new and innovative programmers to address matters
related to Education 5.0
 Ability to initiate and manage change in research and teaching in a transforming environment.
