Deputy Director Maintenance
Job Summary
The Deputy Director Maintenance is responsible to the Director, Central Services, Amenities and Maintenance for the day to day running, repairs and maintenance of university facilities (fleet, buildings, roads, water reticulation, sewer reticulation, electrical installations, equipment and other properties), as well as provision of services and utilities for the wellbeing of the university.
Minimum Qualifications
- Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering, Architecture, or Quantity surveying
- Must be registered member of relevant professional body
- A minimum of 3 years relevant working experience

Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the management of employees who perform general maintenance, planned maintenance, refurbishments, renovations, or direct services to university infrastructure, facilities, and equipment.
- Participates in the strategic planning for assigned areas and assists the Director in developing and implementing the overall departmental strategic plan.
- Establishes performance goals and measures to evaluate success of assigned areas of responsibility.
- Participates in formulating and implementing policies and procedures.
- Supervises the day-to-day operations of assigned areas including the supervision of departmental employees. Provides guidance and direction to staff involved in department services and programs.
- Responsible for ensuring that all programs, activities, and services comply with university and government regulations.
- Provides data as required relating to the management and state of the University’s Maintenance and Transport Units.
- Creates and maintains computerized asset management database.
- Ensures that the Maintenance and Transport Units adhere to all relevant Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation.
- Trains and leads an effective and well-motivated, multi-campus, multi-disciplinary and multi-task maintenance and transport and logistics team.
- Maintains and modernises infrastructure through repairs, renovations and refurbishments of buildings and facilities for smooth implementation of Education 5.0
- Ensures consistent provision of utility services: water supply security, energy and power management, and sewerage treatment works.
- Reduces equipment downtime and unavailability by responding to at least 95% of all reactive maintenance requests within the stipulated time.
- Ensures sustainable and reliable transport and logistics and facilities management.
- Contributes to the University third stream income.
- Contributes to the success of University state of preparedness for events.
- Improves the % cure rate of audit non-compliances.
- Generate business intelligence reports that help leadership in making more accurate, data driven decisions.
- Participates in/on a variety of meetings, committees, task forces, and/or other related groups.
- Increases the ambience of Midlands State University.
